Deep tissue massage focuses on deeper layers of muscle and is often used to treat muscle pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, back and legs. Strokes are similar to other types of massage, but movement is often slower and deeper in order to reach the deeper layers of tissue. Your therapist may use knuckles, elbows and forearms in addition to hands in working out your muscles. Some people may experience some discomfort or pain at certain points in the massage, so it’s important that you communicate with your therapist to remain within your comfort range. Your massage will be a customized massage, incorporating a variety of the techniques presented here.
